Why didn't I think of this?

You know how it is when you come across a good idea, one that is so simple, one that you should have thought of yourself.......but didn't. Today I had one of those "eureka" moments. I came across a pretty decorative plate that I wanted to hang but was out of my wire plate hangers. On a side note, I don't really like those types of hangers as they prevent the plate from lying flat against the wall, making the plate rock. The alternative is buying those round disc plate hangers that stick to the back of the plate. They do the trick but at a whopping $5.00 for a package of two, (at A.C. Moore, can't find them at Michaels) they are just a little too pricey for me. Since I love decorating with plates (they are more than just for the dinner table) I was going to need a better solution.

Ta-da! Here it is. When I turned the plate over to check out the maker's mark, I noticed 2 little tube shaped pieces on the top of the plate. At first I thought the plate was manufactured that way, but upon closer inspection, saw that someone had epoxied on the pieces.

This allows for a piece of string to be threaded through each tube to form a plate hanger. The length of tube can be found at any hardware store and then cut to size. How simple is that!

For the moment I just used some twine that I had handy but plan on switching it out with ribbon. You could then have the ribbon tied in a nice bow above the plate. Or you could make the string shorter so that it does not show at all. The possibilities are endless.

Why didn't I think of this?

Very clever! I don't like the wire plate holders either. I mostly use plate racks but this is very cool to hand just one plate!

That is clever! I wonder if a couple of beads with large holes or buttons would work as well?

Hi Sherrie, I have the same dilemma with the wire plate hangers. They also can scratch the wall or the plate. I just purchased some of the stick on type on sale at the Container Store, but they were still a little pricey. The plate you found is beautiful, by the way! Linda

I'll definitely be using this idea. I have a beautiful set of bird plates from my MIL that I have wanted to hang. Thanks for sharing!!
