Red is popping up all over

After a weekend of church rummage sales, a few lawnsales and receiving a fun find from a friend, I realized that I had a few things to share for Wednesday is Rednesday. I had not participated in awhile, and missed being a part of the cheery red party hosted by Sue @ It's a Very Cherry World. So I have put out my red for today and am off to visit all the other participants. Won't you please join me?

First I have a few finds from the Church Rummage Sale last Friday. Each of these cost either a dime or a quarter. The crocheted dress potholders were too fun to pass by ..... I am not sure where I will put them for the moment. The (hidden) strawberry shortcake tile is dated 1981 and is in back of a 2 piece strawberry which looks like milk glass on the inside. The thermos and tin will join my other collections and you always need another apron.

A lawnsale on Sunday yielded quite a few nice finds including packets of patterns for only a $.25. Here are a few "red" ones that if the sizes were right, I would make and wear.

Here is a close-up.

This red dress is my favorite. I would so want to wear it. Please note that the original price of the pattern is $.35.

My friend Melody had this lovely little sewing machine given to her by her Mom. She never really learned to sew and decided it would have a better home joining my collection of toy sewing machines. She knew I would love the red color as well.

It is a Singer Lockstitch. Thank you Melody.

I meant to post this photo last week. With all the rain that we have been having, please try to remember that "
April Showers bring May Flowers".

Have a good day. I will be posting my Bridal Shower Photos at the end of the week. The event was a success and the bride-to-be was totally surprised.

Don't forget to say Hi to Sue and all the other Rednesday participants.

Seeing Red at Goodwill

Good Morning. The sun is shining and it is a lovely Wednesday is Rednesday. I wasn't sure what to show everyone who is participating in this punch of color little party hosted by Sue at It's A Very Cherry World, that is until I stopped into Goodwill the other day. There were tons of red clothing and other fun red items, and lucky me, I just happened to have my camera.

This outfit consists of an Old Navy stripped shirt and chino's each at $4.99. The sunglasses are brand new at $2.98 and the sneakers $2.99. With this outfit you are ready for a stroll along the beach, shopping at the mall or a picnic at the park.

Here are several shirts at $4.99 each except the one on the far right, a brand new with tags shirt from Chico's for $7.99. The red polka dot shirt next to it is from Talbots. Scarves and a belt at $1.99 would complete any outfit.

Sweaters $4.99.

A red prom dress, brand new with the tags, only $14.99. When my daughter was in high school, she bought all her prom dresses at Goodwill.

Yes you can even buy brand new, with the tags, a red bra or two. $4.99.

For the guys, how about a red hat? Although the "Harley Girl" hat with flames would more than likely be a gift from the hubby. Hats $1.99.

Nothing says love more than Campbell's Soup with Grandpa. $.99 cents each.

After you finish your soup, you can settle down for movie night and make your own popcorn. Popcorn maker $7.99. Really, what can't you find at Goodwill?

The most important Red of the day, is this cart. Please use it to load up your donations to bring to the Goodwill store nearest you, and then fill it back up with your purchases at the store. Both your donations and purchases go to help a lot of folks on so many levels. Plus you end up with a cleaner closet and maybe a few fun vintage finds. It is a win/win situation for all. If you would like more information on the history of Goodwill, Linda at A La Carte had posted this little history segment back in March, please click here to read.

I had a few more outfits to show you featuring some GAP, L.L Bean, Jones of New York pieces; however, a few of my put together outfits disappeared before I had a chance to snap a photo. I guess a few ladies liked what I had assembled.

Please be sure to stop by and see what everyone else is showing for Wednesday is Rednesday with Sue at It's A Very Cherry World.

Okay as you can tell, I was playing with effects in Picnik. I promise I won't try using the red effect again. Honest.

Have a great day.

Cooking up Red (Strawberry Pineapple Freeze)

Today is Tuesdays at the Table, a little cooking party hosted by Cole @ All the Small Stuff. It is a fun gathering and everyone always brings such tasty treats. So far I have brought the best ever banana bread, homemade marshmallows, gumdrop roses and dirt to this virtual table. You may be asking, how does one top edible dirt? Since I also like to show a little color for Wednesday is Rednesday with Sue @ Its a Very Cherry World, I decided " Why Not Cook a Little Red".

Well I needed to get out my frying pan for some inspiration. This number 8 cast iron pan was actually painted by my father in the late 40's or early 50's. Growing up , it had always been a fixture in the family kitchen and is now displayed in mine.

Then I needed my
red cookbooks, I mean I needed to read my cookbooks. Found lots of tasty recipes but not the "one" for today.

Finally one caught my eye. I found the recipe in my very first owned cookbook Better Homes and Gardens Junior Cook Book (with the original price tag of $1.95 still on the red cover of this 1972 culinary guidebook).

Now I am known to be rather creative in the kitchen; however, assembling a photo of all "
red" food products takes that creativity to a new level. Okay this is a stretch for something red, so let's get back to the recipe. It is time to cook.

Here is the recipe for Strawberry-Pineapple Freeze, and as the book title states, For Beginning Cooks of All Ages. This recipe is foolproof. Of course, going with our theme for today, Strawberries are Red.

Ingredients:
1 10 ounce package frozen strawberries, thawed
1 8 3/4 ounce can crushed pineapple
1 cup strawberry-flavored yogurt
1/4 cup sifted powdered sugar
3 pineapple rings
lettuce to garnish

1. Put undrained strawberries in a bowl. Mash with a fork. Open can of crushed pineapple; drain off the liquid. Stir drained pineapple, yogurt and sugar into berries.

2. Line an ice cube tray with foil, having foil extend 3 inches on each side. (This of course is referencing the old fashioned metal ice cube trays. Any other similar size low sided dish would work.) Pour in fruit mixture; fold foil edges over fruit. Freeze till salad is firm, about three hours.

3. Lift salad and foil from tray; let stand a few minutes to soften. Cut salad into 6 wedges. Cut pineapple rings in half; arrange atop each wedge. Serve on lettuce. It makes a refreshing little salad perfect for a warm day garden luncheon.

Not only does this junior cookbook provide good recipes, suggested menus, and table setting etiquette, it also teaches 11 rules about Table Manners. I had to share a few with you. Please remember that these are from 1972.

1. Talk about pleasant subjects.

2. Contribute to the table conversation. Say excuse me if you must interrupt when someone else is talking or telling a story.

3. Wait until the whole family is seated before you begin eating.

4. My personal favorite. Wait for the family to finish eating before excusing yourself from the table. Mother likes to hear a "Thank you" for the meal.

Please click on these links to join Cole and all the other good cooks for Tuesdays at the Table
and after you have checked out all the recipes, please hop on over and see Sue for Wednesday is Rednesday for a little pop of color.

Just a quick reminder that my 100 Followers Giveway ends on Saturday. (I moved the date to the 10th) Please click here to see what the winner will receive and yes you will notice, it is all about having a color scheme. Thank you to all who enter. Good luck.

Red & Green, It is Irish Rednesday!

Happy St. Patrick's Day. Today is also Wednesday is Rednesday. Our gracious host of the party, Sue @ It's a Very Cherry World, suggested last week in honor of the holiday to add a little Irish green to this week's reds. Long before Domestic Diva Martha made this color combo popular by showcasing her daughter's retro kitchen in her Martha Stewart Living magazine, I had long used that color scheme in my decor .... I love putting bright red accents with my Jadeite plates. So here are a few of my pieces.

The breadbox is a reproduction piece, a gift from a friend, and with its "Jadeite Green" color and red roses, it sets the tone for today's Irish Red. The sweet little napkin holder is festooned with strawberries and has a green stripe around the top. I found it at Goodwill for $1.99. It is marked Japan. Everything else except the bundt pan are lawnsale or thrift store finds. The cake pan was marked on clearance 75% off at my local grocery store. You have got to love the color. I am thinking it would look fabulous with red enamel polka dots painted on .... It's okay, I have other bundt pans for any actual cooking.

Red and green thermoses.

Here is just a sample of my glassware, mostly Goodwill or lawnsale finds.

3 vintage potholders, salt and pepper set and a popcorn tin, all from last fall's rummage sale at my favorite church, at $.25 apiece.

I love to collect vintage kitchen utensils both plastic and wooden handles .....

Red and Green. I just love the green glass handle on the egg beater. The tin is going to become a lamp. I have the parts gathered and just need the time to assemble.

I also use new pieces such as this tin sign found at Christmas tree shop, (after Christmas 90% off - - honestly it almost feels like stealing) and I just love the paper napkins, printed with my favorite jadeite green with a red mixer. The cloth napkin is from a set of 6, the same church sale and same price. It was a very good sale!!!

This metal thermometer is one of my favorite pieces. It has two hooks for hanging your potholders. I remember paying $10.00 at a flea market, more than what I usually spend, but I had never seen anything like it before or since. The red salt shaker was a recent purchase for $.50 cents and the green one was a dime last fall at, you guessed it, the best ever church sale.

This tray was a $.50 lawnsale find, I just love the red roses against the green, and the Fire King pieces were all priced between $1.00 - $5.00. I use the food chopper all the time.

The metal red apple cookie jar was found for free!!! The fabric was a lawnsale find, a couple of yards for only a $1.00. Pieced with coordinating fabric, it will be made into curtains. For the time being, I use it as a tablecloth. The photo does not show very well the jadeite green color found in the flowers against the red background. By the way, I have seen Jadeite spelled various ways, this is how I spell it. I would appreciate any suggestions or comments on the issue. Thanks. Also included is another potholder, a crocheted beauty.

My second red apple cookie jar is a porcelain piece and a lawnsale find for $.25. The clock was at Goodwill for a few bucks. Really, with finds like these, who needs Home Goods or Target?

In an earlier post around Christmas, I had remarked that I had never heard of Holt Howard before Vintage Christmas Monday, and that now I wanted to collect them. Imagine my surprise to find that I already owned a piece. I had purchased this little green and red flower candlestick holder at a Christmas Church sale for a dime, sometime ago. I didn't know, at that time, the name Holt Howard. It matches this Christmas theme pot holder perfectly.

Here is a better view of the fabric along with a rug that I have had for over 25 years. I just love the green and red stripes. The tablecloth was found for $2.00 also at a Christmas Fair. The graphics are adorable.

Well that is it for today's reds (and greens). Thank you again to our host Sue. Please be sure to check out all the other participants of
Wednesday is Rednesday (click here) and be sure to wish them all a Happy St. Patrick's Day.

Speaking of happy, nothing brings a smile like a red box of Girl Scout cookies or maybe even two. The boxes are empty, with my family, the cookies only lasted 2 days.

Please be sure to join me again this Friday, when I will be announcing my
100 Followers Giveaway. I am so excited. I couldn't have reached this goal with out the amazing support of all my new friends. I can't wait to show you what I have put together to say Thank You. See you then.

Have a great day.

Wednesday is Rednesday. Welcome to my Kitchen.

Please join Host Sue at It's a Very Cherry World for a very cherry red party!

Wednesday is Rednesday. Welcome to my kitchen. When I decided to re-do my kitchen a few years ago, I went with a retro feel with lots of red accents. My home was built in 1854 and I believe the last kitchen makeover to the cabinets was in the 1940's. I just love the stainless steel hinges on the doors and the handles and would never change them. I designed the kitchen around my vintage table bought years ago at an auction. At that time, the table with leaf and four shiny yellow vinyl chairs cost me $50. Unfortunately the chairs had a few rips and I ended up selling all four at my lawn sale for $45. So come on in , sit down and pour yourself a cup of tea. Let me show you around.

This is one of my favorite pieces of McCoy. It picks up the blue of my wallpaper.

I collect vintage aprons. This one incorporates the red and gray of my table set. I found both the apron and the potholders at Goodwill. It was a very good day.

This wire basket holds plates and napkins. The napkins were $.59 each at Goodwill. The basket was purchased at my local Hannaford Market food store chain. This was somehow considered a Christmas item and I got it for $2.50 when Christmas clearance was at 75%.

I have had these plates for years. I just love the color. Maybe I got the wallpaper just to go with the plates? The kitschy fork and spoon were also Goodwill finds. The cashier, that has now become a good friend, just looked at me and laughed "I was wondering who would want to buy these. I should have thought of you."

Rather than one large picture window, I have four windows. I made 4 valances out of two vintage dishtowels cut down the middle and edged with seam binding tape.

I rarely buy anything on e-bay; however, I knew I wanted to display an old menu that picked up the blue and red of the room. I already owned the pair of deep red vintage frames. So for $6.00, I purchased a set of two menus. The other one will be used for a different project.

This is one of the four new chairs that I purchased at Target to replace the original yellow ones. The name of the chairs is "Lucy". Even at a cost of $20.00 a chair to go with my $5.00 table, my whole kitchen set only cost me $85.00.

This is a chair that I have by the windows. Purchased for $3.00 at a lawn sale, I think it came from a barber shop or hair salon. It is really comfortable.

Just a few more red accents: chicken trivet, red doorknobs, tea pot , and clock.

You can see in the background of some of the photos, my curtains. They were made with a vintage red/gray tablecloth a few years ago but they have gotten a little faded and they never had the pop of color that I wanted. So I am making new curtains. I pulled together fabric from my sewing room stash and bought some new red fabric at Joann's Fabric for just $3.00 a yard. I am designing some new curtains that will each have the look of a vintage apron , complete with ruffles, trims, and pockets.

When I was describing to a friend my plan for new curtains, she asked if I would like some red pom pom trim. She had used yards and yards of this trim for a Christmas tree garland years ago and it was just sitting around her basement. I don't think I could have said yes, any faster or more eagerly. At $2.99 a yard, this trim is expensive. I am so happy she thought of me.

I will be delighted to show off my new curtains. Who knows, maybe in time for next Wednesday Rednesday. If you would like to see more photos of my kitchen and the old curtains, please click here. Don't forget to check out what everyone else is doing for red. It is such a happy color, don't you agree?

Unless it is red showing on your Fuel Monitor........ meaning 1/4 of a tank or less of oil. Oh bother, I was hoping to make it through the month of March before the next delivery. Oh well, the days are getting longer and warmer, right?

Have a good day.

Sherrie
