Ticket Holder to the Magic Carpet Ride

Come Ride the Magic Carpet Ride!

It is time for One World One Heart, an international blogging event created and hosted by Lisa at A Whimsical Bohemian, to officially begin. How appropriate it is to respond to this global call to join together, to talk and to share, especially as the crisis in Haiti continues to be in our daily lives, our hearts and prayers. Let us all take this time to reach across the countries to say Hello, it is nice to meet you, how are you, and glad that we met. It makes the world a smaller and friendlier place. So I bid you all a hearty welcome to my post, allow me to introduce myself.

I am a 40 something mom of one (now college age) daughter, self employed with 2 businesses, avid gardener (is it Spring yet?), cook and artist. I was born and raised in Maine and still reside here. Mainers take great pride in our State. The sun rises first upon this most eastern part of the United States, along our rocky coastline. May I also mention that a cooked Maine lobster dipped in melted butter, is pure heaven .... "wicked good". To understand what a true "Mainer" is consider this: Two men each in their 80's are sitting on the front porch talking about a third man, a friend of theirs. An argument had been ensuing about the residential status of this absent friend. The first gentleman says "I have known John all my life as my next door neighbor, right here in Maine, and I am 82. Of course he is a Mainer! To which the other gentleman adamantly responded "No he isn't....he is 83 and moved to Maine when he was one."

I have been to Tokyo, Berlin, Paris, and many other places that perhaps I will hear comments from in the next few weeks, unfortunately these visits were not real, but from the pages of books. Each page read, was another personal carpet ride to a new adventure. I made countless safari trips to Africa (with my imaginary pet lion), had tea with the Mad Hatter and was a princess, cowgirl, astronaut, famous dancer, singer and detective. I couldn't wait until I was finally old enough to receive my very own library card. No passport or train/airline ticket could ever take me to the places visited through books. It was indeed a magic carpet ride!

For those visiting today, please share with me what it is like where you live, what is a favorite food for you, are you down the road apiece as they say, or around the corner, across the miles or across the pond? For all those who leave a comment on this post, you will be eligible to win my give-away, my first one. From now until February 15th, please leave a comment with a link back to yourself or an e-mail address to be contacted if the winner. One will be randomly chosen and announced at 12 noon, U.S. Eastern Time, on the 15th. After leaving your comment, please click on the One World One Heart logo on my sidebar to start your journey to all the other ticket holders for this carpet ride.

By the way, this is my give-away. As I love all things vintage, here is a hand-made lingerie pouch, 2 vintage floral handkerchiefs, a hand-made roses barrette, and a lovely pink bracelet, marked Coro, a US jewelry manufacturer in the 1950's. I hope that you like them. I look forward to meeting you all. Thank you for visiting.

A Mainer! I grew up in NJ and we went to Maine in the summer for vacation - I was young and don't even remember the town we went to! I just remember how pretty it was and the giant multi colored lolly pops my dad used to buy us when we reached our destination! Now I am in Oklahoma, living in a very nice town with people who wave to you when you drive by and they don't even know you! No favorite food - love all types!

You want me to talk about my beloved homeland? My Texas? Well, didn't you ask the right local! :D

We live in what's called the boonies- last stop on a dirt road, twenty five miles from the nearest small town, ten minutes from the nearest barbecue joint. We got the cows, we got the coyotes, we pretty much live in the stereotypical way people seem to think all Texans do. I am a bad refutation of the argument.

But we're an hour from Austin, which is very different indeed, and we love the museums and the Chinese seafood shops, and in another direction there's San Antonio and the best Tex Mex in the country...and my favorite food is a good solid mass o'fajitas.

We do the native-or-not thing, too. One poor friend was born outside of Texas-- just by six weeks!-- but poor fella, he's never gonna be a Texan. It's affected his mind, you know-- he's always a little too sane!;)

Do feel free to come by and say the Mainer equivalent of howdy, any time!:D

Hi- I'm nancy from the west side of Michigan. My 15-year old son and I took a great trip to Maine this summer for 3 weeks. We loved the rocky coast and the ocean. We went on TWO whale watching trips and that was the most amazing thing to see. We loved Acadia and the numerous antique shops to visit. We are definitely planning on coming back to your beautiful state. Thanks for your lovely give away and I hope you are having as much fun as I am visiting all these creative blogs.

I live down the road a piece. That is - on the opposite end of the country! Southern Cal. I'm loving NOT scraping the ice off my windows this winter and walking down to the beach when I fancy a walk. I'm also growing worryingly addicted to "real" Mexican tacos. Mmm.

Hello from Coaldale, Alberta, Canada a very small prairie town. Not loving it here, moved 3 years ago from Vancouver, BC and I'm still homesick but I'm close to my parents and sister and life here is much cheaper so instead of a small condo I now have a 1/4 acre and a charming country cottage home with my studio in the backyard and a huge workshop in the basement so that all makes in tolerable. I'll probably move back to Vancouver someday. I love East Indian, Thai food and a good pizza every now & then. Living here is very peaceful and it also gives me lots of time to focus on my art which is my passion. If you have time please visit my blog #450 all about Pretty! and my shared blog #534 The Vintage Chicks for my giveaways.

Hi Sherrie: I just flew up from Atlanta and very much enjoyed my mini tour of Maine. And thank you for stopping by Foxy G's Den of i-KNIT-quity and taking my little tour of Atlanta.

Your giveaway is so very precious and thoughtful. I love vintage. People roll their eyes when I tell them that I have a collection of more than 3,500 ashtrays and other tobacco memorabilia that goes back more than 100 years and want to one day curate an exhibit of the 20th century as seen through these items.

I'm going to have to go now; I like cold weather, but not like this! Ciao!

Hello, I'm Sherry from across the pond - England! I was born in London within the sound of the Bow Bells so that makes me a true cockney!! I now live just outside London, but it's still fairly urban - maybe one day we'll retire to the countryside! I love going to Charity shops here in the UK (like your thrift/goodwill stores I think) and finding things I can re-use in craft projects.

Your giveaway is lovely, I hope you can come see mine (if you haven’t already!) (ticket#251)

I need to get back up to Maine ASAP, it's been too long (year before last)... wishing for spring to get here too but they warm Feb. and March will be the coldest yet so, blah! Love your vintage goodies, especially the pouch... wishing you much peace and a speedy spring! M

Thank you for stopping by my blog and entering my OWOH giveaway. I hope you'll be back again, soon!

What a sweet rosy giveaway! I'd love a chance to win!

I've been to your neck of the woods, visiting dear friends in Sargentville near Bar Harbor. They had a Victorian farmhouse on the water, it was lovely and even had a name: Sea Reach. We spent a week, antiquing, sightseeing, eating, and visiting. We even cooked lobsters! It was May and there was a beautiful spring snow on the first night we were there. It's a happy memory.

I lived in CA for 37 years but now live in Colorado. It's beautiful here and I love the slower pace. It's also a very nice place to raise a family.

My favorite food? Pasta with cream sauce. Garlic bread. Any kind of fresh bread! I could go on and on...

It's nice to meet you! Thank you for the chance to win one of your wonderful giveaways. I love shopping at thrift stores too! I live in Albuquerque, NM so there are plenty, you could spend a whole day and not get to all of them! It's very snowy today so when you hear that we live in the desert that doesn't mean it doesn't snow. I have 2 inches at my house now. I hate the snow! My favorite food, anything with noodles, if dessert had noodles I'd eat it. Don't forget to stop by all 3 of my blogs and enter my giveaways too! And sorry I talk a lot!

Hi Sherrie,

I enjoyed my little visit and insight to Maine, who knows, perhaps I might just get to visit for real one of these days. Please come and visit with me (#70) in Australia via the magic carpet ride. I live about 4 1/2 hours north of Sydney on 5 acres in a picturesque little green valley which is just 25 kms in from the beautiful east coast, it is mostly a dairy farming community but there are also many artist and craftspersons in the area and a very active craft group which meets once a week. I have a couple of pics in the side bar of my blog if your would like to take a little peep.

I love the beautiful vintage items that you are offering as your gift to guests, please enter me in the draw. Lovely to meet you,

What a lovely offering for this magical giveaway. My mother use to tell me about all the places she had been as I was growing up and thinking she really went there....LOL! But her love of reading finally sunk in with me too.

I grew up in Texas (Houston area) and now I live in Las Vegas, NV. So from you I'm way across the map! When I drive down the street everywhere I look I see mountains. Sometimes they almost look like they are painted on and other times well just majestic. I miss the ocean very much and long to be close to it again. I'm definitely more of a "sea level" kind of girl!

I hope your magic carpet takes you on a wonderful journey.

I laughed at your tale of the 2 "Mainers"!
I live in a corner of Southern California where we're inland, at the edge of the desert, yet can be up in the mountains in snow in less than 30 minutes or down at the beach in an hour or less (well, depending on our infamous traffic jams...).
What a sweet, generous giveaway! I love handkerchiefs and vintage linens. Thank you for the opportunity - and for having stopped by to visit mine (#685 on the list - blogger doesn't seem to want to take my typepad id, tonight).
Lovely to have met you on the OWOH tour!
p.s. I just read your account of your first date with your husband - what a great story. What are the odds he'd have a potato masher handy, just out in the car? Sounds like it was meant to be!
